Southern Nevada Nail Salons Navigate New Licensing Standards
Updated state licensing requirements are prompting nail salons across southern Nevada to adjust training and staffing practices.
Nail salons across southern Nevada are adjusting training and staffing practices in response to updated state licensing standards, changes regulators say are meant to standardize sanitation training that had previously varied significantly between individual salon owners.
The updated standards require additional continuing education hours focused specifically on infection control, a change some salon owners welcomed as overdue and others described as an added cost burden for small, independently owned shops already operating on thin margins.
Consumer awareness groups say the update is a meaningful improvement but note that licensing alone does not guarantee consistent practice from technician to technician. They continue to recommend that customers watch for basic signs of proper sanitation, including sealed single-use tools and visible sterilization equipment.
State licensing officials say compliance checks will increase over the coming year as the new training requirements are phased in, with a grace period for salons still completing updated certifications.
